I’m running for a seat on the Democratic National Committee for a number of reasons. The first is that I believe in the power of politics to be a force for good – I should, politics saved my life – literally. I came to this country as a political refugee at age 5 with my parents and siblings, feeing from political persecution in Iran. America has made it possible for me to build an active, politically engaged life. I am the person I am today because of the democratic process which I adamantly believe is a large part of what makes our country great.
I am also running for the DNC because I believe it’s vital for people to get engaged in the political process. Democracy is not a spectator sport. Since 2008, Democrats have lost 900 legislative seats nationwide. This has to change if we want our shared values and interests represented on the grand scale. In order to make this happen, I have dedicated my professional life to getting Democrats heard and elected in the red, blue, and purple areas of our state. Sizable wins are what will move all of our communities forward.
As a general consultant, I have been successful at fundraising and organizing for Democrats throughout Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties, including a number of largely Republican areas. My own inherent pragmatism, experience with conflict resolution, and capability at managing campaigns, makes me someone who gets things done.
As the former Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Orange County, I have been able to improve voter outreach, rally grassroots organization, and increase public awareness of the issues affecting the county. I’m honored to advance public safety by working with firefighter associations in north San Diego County to help them elect pro-public safety council members and ensure a fair contract for their members. I’m proud to say that in every campaign I’ve worked on with the firefighters, we have been successful in keeping our majority intact.
If elected, I would serve as the first Iranian-American elected to the DNC. I identify myself as an American through and through yet I understand the power and importance of visual symbols. They send a clear message as to just where our party stands on inclusion and diversity – a message that matters so much in today’s climate of vitriol and fear.
I think we are all concerned about the direction our country could choose. I also think we all know that if we have a strong, active party, working to bring everyone together in common cause, we can choose a better direction for us and for our children. I am seeking your vote and endorsement to elect me to the Democratic National Committee. Voting will take place this summer during the CDP Executive Board meeting in Long Beach.
